Frequently asked questions
How do I make text bold on WhatsApp?
Type an asterisk before and after the text, with no space between the asterisk and the word: *hello* shows in bold. You can also select the text in the chat and pick Bold from the menu that appears.
Why doesn't the formatting show in my message?
The symbols must touch the text: *hello* works and * hello * does not. If the other person has an old version of WhatsApp, they may see the symbols instead of lists, quotes or inline code, which arrived in 2024.
Can I combine bold, italic and strikethrough?
Yes. Put one symbol inside the other: *_hello_* shows in bold italic. With the formatter, select the text and tap both buttons.
Does formatting work on WhatsApp Business and WhatsApp Web?
